Statement of Position from the National Committee
16th December 2009
The Ulysses Club is pleased that the level of ACC levy increases not just for motorcyclists but for
most New Zealanders has been scaled back from the outrageous numbers originally suggested. However motorcyclists and others are still facing hefty increases and the issue of
multiple vehicle ownership with multiple levy payments has not been addressed.
We still believe that any rise was unnecessary and that ACC continue to
use flawed logic in making their decisions.
We are against the further changes that this Government still intends to
make to ACC
as they will adversely impact on most New Zealanders.
We believe that it is time for a comprehensive review of ACC and this
can only
be done
with cross party support
for an independent,
robust and transparent investigation.
We continue to offer the opportunity to ACC and the government to engage in comprehensive
dialogue on all matters relating
to motorcycle-specific and related road safety issues. The Ulysses Club supports a return to injury revention and other
programmes focussed
on reducing the risks to motorcyclists, and welcomes the proposal to set up a taskforce similar
to the Victorian model to address these.
The Club wants to be involved with any initiatives that
can improve
the safety of motorcyclists on the roads.
The protests made by motorcyclists did cause the government to take note and reduce levies.
Many groups worked together to maintain pressure for a sustained period of time.
Every protest action - from a personal letter or visit to an MP, to participating in the Bikeoi or the
other rallies
that were held– has made a difference.
We need to build on that collaboration to ensure
that strengthened
and aligned strategies will support
the further actions that will need to take place
if we are to hold
the
government accountable for the fair and effective operation of ACC.

The Ulysses club can be described as a
social club for people over 40 with a common interest in motorcycling.
The Ulysses Club was formed in Australia in 1983, so early New Zealand
members joined through Australia. As the New Zealand numbers grew a branch
was formed in New Zealand to look after things here. When members reached
around the 400 mark The Ulysses Club New Zealand was formed, with each area
having a Coordinator to run things in their areas. By the end of 1997
membership numbers had passed the 4000 mark. The club continues to grow,
despite the overall decline in motorcycling.
